Dragon boating has been part of life in this part of the world forever – experts reckon competitions have been taking place in southern China for 2,500 years! – and it started to emerge as an international sport right here in Hong Kong in the 70s.
If you want to see what it takes to paddle, follow the sound of drums and cheering to your nearest slice of Hong Kong coast on June 9th, the Tuen Ng Festival public holiday.
Races are taking place everywhere from Aberdeen and Sai Kung to Cheung Chau and Tai O, but the biggest event is probably the Stanley International Dragon Boat Championships. Dozens of teams will paddle the 270 metre course – from fiercely competitive semi-pros to fun-loving corporate groups decked out in fancy dress.
Of course, this got me thinking about properties close to the action! Here are my top picks:
- Fairwinds – Situated right behind the Hong Kong Sea School, this 3,000 sq ft apartment looks straight out over Stanley Main beach – perfect for watching the races while keeping cool in the air-con. Get your binoculars ready to check out who crosses the finish line first!
- Jade Beach Villa – Take a leisurely stroll along the coastline from this three-bedroom house in Chung Hom Kok and head to Stanley Main Beach to soak up the fun festival atmosphere.
- Jadewater – Once upon a time, Aberdeen was a little fishing village. Those days might be long past, but the promenade still hosts traditional dragon boat races every year, and you’ll get a great view of them from this apartment’s balcony.
If you’re looking for a home away from home during the festivities, we’ve got you covered too! The Yin & Yi Serviced Apartments, in Central and Tsim Sha Tsui respectively, are offering a 30% discount on stays from June 6th to June 9th. Prices start from HK$1,286 per night.
And don’t worry if you happen to miss the Dragon Boat Festival itself! There’s another chance to see the paddling over the weekend at the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races on Victoria Harbour, complete with San Miguel Beer Fest!
All the best to the teams taking part this week!
Where will you all be watching this year?
